You can pick up a 2017 Kia Soul in one of three trim levels. The base model has plenty of features to offer despite its low MSRP of $15,990, such as a Bluetooth hands-free phone system with steering wheel controls, six speakers, and a six-way adjustable driver's seat. The next model is the Soul +, which adds automatic headlights, fog lights, and a 5-inch touchscreen for the audio system. The last trim is the Soul !, which upgrades the touchscreen to a 7-inch model with UVO eServices, adds red highlights to the lower body, and gives drivers a smart key with a push-button engine starter.

Engine (Power)

Each trim of the 2017 Soul comes with a different engine. The base model has a 1.6-liter I4 that offers 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, a six-speed manual transmission, and 27 combined miles per gallon. The Soul + comes with a 2.0-liter I4 that improves the horsepower to 161 and the torque to 150 pound-feet, it uses a six-speed automatic with Sportmatic, and it still delivers 27 combined mpg. The Soul ! runs on a 1.6-liter I4 with turbo, giving it 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet. It also uses an advanced seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and the fuel efficiency goes up to 28 combined mpg.

Performance

You'll get the best performance from a 2017 Kia Soul !, but even if you pick another trim, you'll still get four disc brakes, smooth handling, and the FlexSteer system. FlexSteer doesn't change everything about how the Soul performs the way that a drive mode selector does in an expensive luxury car, but it does let you change how the power steering responds by switching between Normal, Comfort, and Sport modes.

Interior

The 2017 Soul might be an inexpensive compact SUV, but it can still come with a remarkable number of features. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is available on the + and ! models, and it includes UVO eServices, navigation, and HD Radio. You can also add packages that include a 10-way adjustable driver's seat, heated front and rear seats, and leather seats. As for cargo space, the Soul's boxy appearance gives drivers 24.2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and up to 61.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Safety Features

The 2017 Kia Soul has all the basics of safety covered thanks to its Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, rear child-safety locks, and six air bags. The Soul also offers driver assistance features like a rear camera display, a rear cross-traffic alert with a blind spot detection system, a Lane Departure Warning System, and a Forward Collision Warning System, which gives an audio warning if the driver approaches too close to a much slower object.
