2018 Kia Niro
The Kia Niro is a hybrid SUV with a hatchback design and room for five. For 2018, Kia added lane keep assist to the list of safety features that come with the Advanced Technology Package. There is also a new Premium Package for the EX that adds most of the features of the Touring model, and Kia added a new Touring Graphite Edition with some different color accents. Here are some more details about the 2018 Kia Niro.
Trim Levels
The Niro comes in five different trim levels starting with the FE. This is the most fuel-efficient trim and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic headlights. If you bump up to the LX trim you'll get LED taillights and roof rails along with keyless entry. The EX trim has all the features of the LX and adds power-folding rear side mirrors, 18-inch wheels, and some interior upgrades. You can add the Premium Package for a sunroof and a gloss black front grille. The Touring model comes with all the features of the lower trims and the 18-inch wheels, and the new Touring Graphite Edition trim has Platinum Graphite paint, black 18-inch wheels, and glossy black roof rails along with a metallic front grille.
Engine
All the trims come with the same 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. This combination delivers 139 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The Niro also comes standard with front-wheel drive and it has a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Performance
Since this is a hybrid crossover SUV, the big story is the fuel-efficiency. The best performer is the FE trim which returns 52 miles per gallon in the city and 49 mpg on the highway. The rest of the lineup will also get good mileage with 51 miles per gallon in the city and 46 mpg on the highway. The Niro has the option to drive in Sport mode which makes it accelerate quicker and shift efficiently through the gears for a more spirited drive.
Interior
The Niro's cabin is spacious for a compact vehicle and the seats have plenty of support. The base trim comes with a 7-inch touch-screen display and Kia's infotainment system which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also has Bluetooth and a USB port. The LX adds a storage space under the floor of the cargo area and with the Technology Package, and you'll also get a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX with the Premium Package comes with an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, LED map lights, and leather seats. The upscale Touring Graphite Edition will get you a premium stereo system and a 10-way power driver's seat.
Safety Features
All the trims come standard with a rearview camera, while the LX with the Advanced Technology package adds several extra safety features. This includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Kia also makes other advanced safety features available on the higher trims including a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist. The Touring model comes standard with front and rear parking sensors.
